Glendale Awarded Arboricultural Maintenance Contract 2022-2026 for the London Borough of Southwark

Glendale has been awarded the Arboricultural Maintenance Contract 2022-2026 for the London Borough of Southwark starting in the Autumn of 2022!

Description of the Works:

The Contract will cover the following areas:

Highways and amenity greens
Parks and open spaces;
Housing Estates (and other Housing sites);
Schools, Libraries and Local Authority controlled educational establishments:
Cemeteries, closed churchyards and allotments;
Woodlands;

Southwark borders the City of London and Tower Hamlets to the north along the River Thames, Lambeth to the west and Lewisham to the east. To the south are the
London Boroughs of Bromley and Croydon. The main centres within Southwark include Borough, Elephant & Castle, Bermondsey, Rotherhithe, Walworth,
Camberwell, Peckham and Dulwich. With an approximate population of 314,200 Southwark represents a thriving community, which has shown itself more than capable of adapting to its changing fortunes, the most recent of which is a bold vision of urban regeneration and innovative approaches to land use and partnership which have brought about a re- birth within the area. Vast sections of Southwark are currently under regeneration programmes with an estimated value stretching into £billions.

Modern Southwark is an area of contrasts. In the north around London Bridge is a thriving business district, home to financial institutions, services companies and an emerging arts and media sector. Highly desirable riverside residential districts embody high quality design and lifestyle. Further south in Peckham is one of the biggest regeneration initiatives in the country. Heralded as best practice by visitors
from all over the world, it has replaced high rise flats with houses and gardens for local families. Other large-scale regeneration is currently well underway in the Elephant & Castle and Walworth areas, with other areas such as the Old Kent Road corridor and Canada Water in the planning stages. Southwark is a diverse borough with people from a wide range of ethnicities and backgrounds. Over 120 languages are spoken here, and 11% of households have no members who speak English as their first language. Approximately 54% of Southwark’s population is of white ethnicity, 25% black, 11% Asian and 10% other ethnicities.

Since 2014, Southwark Council (“the Council”) has provided Arboricultural Maintenance Services in-house with increasing support from external suppliers in order to maintain all trees within the public realm sites i.e. highways, parks, housing estates, woodlands and schools. During this period over 82,500 trees have been surveyed which have enabled the Arboricultural Team to focus priority on the works outlined in there specification.

In March 2019 the council declared a climate emergency and vowed to “do all it can to make the borough carbon neutral by 2030.’’ Southwark’s tree stock provides broad ranging community benefits contributing to Southwark’s wider natural capital (assessed in December 2019 using the i-Tree Eco Stratified approach). Tree management and tree planting is an increasingly important element of the emerging Southwark Climate Strategy and therefore putting in place a sustainable service arrangements that can deliver against these themes is a priority.

1. Lot 8 Plymouth, Exeter & Newton Abbot – Grounds Maintenance 4 year contract  1+1 at an estimated £60,000 pa

2. Clarion Housing Group (Lot 1 South London Arb) – Arboriculture 6 year contract £300,000 pa

3. Clarion Housing Group (Lot 3 South – Kent & Surrey Arb) – Arboriculture, 6 year contract £130,000 pa

• HS2 SCS Railways – Works Package 289 Advanced  Plantation – Grounds Maintenance – The Main Works Civils Contracts (MWCCs) cover the whole of Phase One, from London to Birmingham. For the MWCCs, 4 joint ventures have been appointed of which SCS JV (Skanska Construction UK Limited, Costain Limited, STRABAG AG – UK Branch joint venture) has been awarded Area South (S1 and S2 sectors), which covers the length of the planned route from London Euston out to the Harvil Road (West Ruislip).  The work entails tree planting, tree clearance, Tree survey scrub clearance and fencing. 1 year framework
