Laura Owens graduated from the University of South Wales with a 2:1 in physical geography in 2015. She joined Glendale’s Graduate Scheme in the summer of the same year.
She comments: “I found out about the Glendale Graduate scheme through my university. The fact that it was advertised via an institute of higher education gave me a very good perception of the scheme.
“Whilst taking part in the scheme I’ve learnt a range of skills from an operational level right up to managerial roles. You get the opportunity to interact with a wide range of individuals and develop a wide range of skill sets, both in an office based environment and operationally.
“Overall, I feel a lot more rounded as a person and I believe that I have developed the necessary skills for good management along with operational knowledge. So far, I have passed my D746, working with power lines and my IOSH managing safely certificate in health and safety.”
After completing the Glendale Graduate scheme Laura was appointed to the position of supervisor on Glendale’s new contract with Newport City Homes.
She continues: “The Newport contract has now been running for almost a year, and over the last four months I’ve been responsible for its operations. The organisational skills you need to develop in order to operate a contract like this are extremely important – along with the communication skills required to deal professionally with clients, customers and employees.
“I’m looking forward to starting the new cutting season and hope that the contract continues to grow along with the implementation of new contracts in the future.
“Going forward I’d like to undertake my NVQ Level 3 in Business Management and I’d like to gain enough experience to progress from the position of supervisor up to contract manager.”
